Kuala Lumpur Metro Map: Key Facts for Travelers

Shah Alam Line service

The Shah Alam Line has carried passengers between Bandar Utama and Johan Setia since June 29, 2026.

The Kuala Lumpur metro map brings five local rail terms into one visitor guide: MRT, LRT, KL Monorail, KTM Komuter and Express Rail Link. Together they form the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System.

The KL MRT map and the wider Kuala Lumpur MRT map cover more than the two MRT routes. This guide explains the rail connections that matter to visitors while keeping KTM and airport services separate where tickets and gates differ.

The Rapid KL network combines six MRT and LRT lines with the KL Monorail. The Kelana Jaya Line has carried Klang Valley passengers on fully automated, driverless trains since 1998, making it Malaysia’s first rail system of its kind. The first section entered service on September 1, 1998.

The Kuala Lumpur metro map needs to distinguish lines that operate today from future projects. The Shah Alam Line opened on June 29, 2026, while MRT3 remains an approved orbital project without a published passenger-opening year.

Rapid Rail’s busiest recorded day was May 29, 2024, with 1,004,591 trips across the Kelana Jaya, Ampang and Sri Petaling, Monorail, Kajang and Putrajaya services.

KTM Komuter and the ERL airport services run outside the Rapid KL network and apply their own fares and ticket rules.

KL MRT Map Guide: MRT, LRT and Monorail Lines

• LRT Kelana Jaya Line, red: Gombak to Putra Heights. This driverless line serves KLCC, Pasar Seni and Masjid Jamek, with weekday peak trains every 3 minutes; MyRapid publishes the service details.

How to Read the Kuala Lumpur Metro Map

• Interchange symbols mark the transfer stations; journeys that leave the Rapid KL network fall under the separate KTM Komuter and ERL ticket rules.
• MRT Putrajaya Line, yellow: Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya Sentral. TRX is a central interchange, while Putrajaya Sentral connects to the separate KLIA Transit airport service; last departures from Kwasa Damansara run at 11:36 PM from Monday to Saturday, as listed on the timetable page.
• Shah Alam Line, light blue: Bandar Utama to Johan Setia, 37.8 km, with 20 operating and five provisional stations. Passenger service began at 6:00 AM on June 29, 2026; Bandar Utama connects with Kajang MRT and Glenmarie 2 with Kelana Jaya LRT.
• KL Monorail, light green: KL Sentral to Titiwangsa, 8.6 km with 11 stations. Bukit Nanas serves KL Tower, and trains run every 7 to 12 minutes depending on the day; MyRapid lists the departure times.

The most useful stations for a first visit include KLCC for the Petronas Twin Towers, Bukit Bintang for the central shopping district and Muzium Negara for a pedestrian connection to KL Sentral. The Department of Statistics Malaysia counted 27.0 million domestic visitors in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur in 2024 in its Domestic Tourism Survey, more than any state except Selangor.

KL Sentral is not an MRT station name. The Kajang Line stops at Muzium Negara, and the station information from Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) identifies the pedestrian connection to the KL Sentral transport hub.

The Petronas Twin Towers and Suria KLCC are served by KLCC station on the Kelana Jaya Line; Suria KLCC’s visitor directions identify station KJ10. Bukit Bintang is on the Kajang Line, and the station details place it in the surrounding shopping and dining district.

Batu Caves requires KTM Komuter and is not an MRT or LRT destination. The official departure information lists the Batu Caves commuter corridor separately.

No. The airport leg is provided by Express Rail Link, or ERL, not as a through MRT or LRT ride. The simplest route is KLIA Ekspres from KL Sentral.

KLIA Ekspres runs every 20 minutes and takes 28 minutes to KLIA Terminal 1, followed by 3 more minutes to Terminal 2. The adult fare is RM55.00 (≈ USD13.61) for a single ticket or RM100.00 (≈ USD24.75) for a return ticket. The operator publishes current airport times and fares.

KLIA Transit takes 39 minutes from KL Sentral to Terminal 2 and costs RM55.00 (≈ USD13.61) for an adult single ticket. KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit tickets are not interchangeable. Travelers continuing to Thailand can plan onward city transfers with the Bangkok metro map.

The Putrajaya Sentral airport route uses the MRT Putrajaya Line to Putrajaya Sentral, followed by a walk of 1 to 2 minutes and a separate KLIA Transit ticket. The airport leg takes 16 minutes to Terminal 1 and another 4 minutes to Terminal 2, at RM9.40 (≈ USD2.33) for an adult. Rapid KL passes such as My50 are not valid at the KLIA Transit gate. USD conversions use Bank Negara Malaysia’s reference rate of USD 1 = RM 4.0401 for August 20, 2026.

The urban rail network uses distance-based fares. The official fare calculator compares token, Touch ’n Go and concession fares for a selected journey.

A Touch ’n Go card price starts at RM10.00 (≈ USD2.48), with stored value separate; station packages may bundle the card with a minimum stored value. Current pass conditions list rail customer-service counters as sales points, subject to stock and excluding BRT and bus-hub counters.

For international visitors, Rapid Kembara is open to all users and costs RM25.00 (≈ USD6.19) for one day or RM55.00 (≈ USD13.61) for three days, excluding the card and minimum purse value.

My50 costs RM50.00 (≈ USD12.38) for 30 days and is restricted to Malaysian citizens.

Debit and credit cards are accepted at all staffed Rapid Rail customer-service counters for token purchases, Touch ’n Go reloads and pass subscriptions. Ticket-vending machines also sell tokens; the counter-payment notice distinguishes this service from the gates.

Rapid Rail’s counter card acceptance does not make direct bank-card tapping a dependable gate option. The Ministry of Transport still described open payment as an implementation project in December 2024, so a token or Touch ’n Go card remains the practical urban-rail choice.

KTM Komuter has different rules. Its gates accept physical MyDebit, Visa and Mastercard cards, supported mobile wallets, KTM media and Touch ’n Go. Riders must use the same payment medium at entry and exit, with the same device for a virtual card.

Rapid KL tokens tap at entry and are inserted at exit. A Touch ’n Go card is the stored-value alternative, while ERL airport services need a separate ticket.

All six MRT and LRT lines begin at 6:00 AM. Actual last trains vary by line, station and direction.

Frequencies are listed by time band, with separate CBD and non-CBD waits on the Ampang and Sri Petaling lines.

The KL Monorail also opens at 6:00 AM. Weekday peaks run every 7 minutes; other weekday bands use 10 minutes. Saturday waits are 8 to 10 minutes, while Sunday and public-holiday waits are 10 to 12 minutes.

The last-train table lists terminal departures, not intermediate-station times. Full station times are available for Kelana Jaya, Ampang/Sri Petaling, Kajang, Putrajaya and Shah Alam through the official line pages.

Last KL Monorail departures are 11:30 PM from KL Sentral and 11:55 PM from Titiwangsa. Connections need a one-hour buffer before last-train operation ends, and special events may use dedicated schedules.

Sunday and public-holiday operating bands end earlier on the Kajang, Putrajaya and Shah Alam lines than on regular Monday-to-Saturday service.

The Shah Alam Line is already in passenger service. It was inaugurated on June 28, 2026; the official record states that passenger service began at 6:00 AM on June 29, 2026.

The Shah Alam Line links Bandar Utama and Johan Setia over 37.8 km. Prasarana Malaysia Berhad owns the project. The operating scope includes 20 stations, with five additional provisional stations.

Paid service on the Shah Alam Line began on August 15, 2026, and fares also apply to feeder buses and Park N’ Ride. The published end-to-end fares are RM4.90 cash (≈ USD1.21), RM4.30 cashless (≈ USD1.06) and RM2.40 concession (≈ USD0.59). Stored-value cards need a minimum balance of RM5.00 (≈ USD1.24). Touch ’n Go is used at the gates; vending machines issue journey tickets, with QR tickets specific to Shah Alam Line machines.

Bandar Utama connects with the Kajang MRT, while Glenmarie 2 connects with the Kelana Jaya LRT. The project design targets an end-to-end journey of under 60 minutes.

MRT3 is a different project. Its 51 km orbital alignment has final Railway Scheme approval and is designed with ten interchange stations connecting MRT, LRT, KTM and Monorail. The Singapore MRT map covers the neighboring network to the south.

The July 2025 MRT3 Railway Scheme approval allowed land acquisition to begin, and that acquisition is targeted for completion by the end of 2026.

MRT Corp has not announced a passenger-opening year for MRT3; in June 2026 the company was still tendering land-protection works such as demolition, fencing and clearing.

Fun Fact: In its 2022 country brochure, Alstom described Kuala Lumpur’s 374-vehicle Innovia Metro order as its largest such order globally. Final assembly and interior fit-out for Kelana Jaya vehicles took place locally at Westport.
