The Taipei MRT at a Glance

• The urban map separates TRTC’s five lines from New Taipei Metro’s Circular and Sanying lines; Sanying began passenger trial operation on June 30, 2026.
• A single journey costs NT$20-NT$65 (≈ US$0.62-US$2.00), while an EasyCard or iPASS simplifies repeated tap-in and tap-out trips.
• Regular service runs from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM; central sections can average under three minutes at peak times, while late service is less frequent.
• From Taoyuan International Airport, the separate Airport MRT usually reaches A1 Taipei Main Station in 36-39 minutes by Express, depending on the terminal.
• Taipei Songshan Airport is directly on the Wenhu Line at Songshan Airport BR13, with a 16-minute in-system journey to Taipei Main Station.

Current Service Updates

A trial timetable has been in effect on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line since July 23, 2026. On August 4, 2026, Guangci/Fengtian Temple remained closed for boarding and alighting, so Xiangshan was the passenger terminus. Check live line status before travel.

The Taipei metro map above separates three operators and lets visitors distinguish the five-line TRTC city network from New Taipei Metro’s Circular and Sanying lines and the separate Taoyuan Airport MRT. The line codes, fares, operating hours, airport links and practical station choices for major sights are explained below.

Taipei became Taiwan’s first city with an MRT system when commercial service began on the original Muzha section, now part of the Wenhu Line, on March 28, 1996.

Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation, or TRTC, currently operates five main lines, 117 stations and 131.1 km. It recorded 767.1 million journeys in 2025, averaging about 2.1 million trips per day.

Demand remained at the same scale in early 2026: TRTC recorded 380.3 million journeys from January through June, again averaging about 2.1 million daily trips across its five-line network.

The official operating map also includes the Circular Line, whose open 14-station section runs 15.4 km from Dapinglin to New Taipei Industrial Park. It has been operated separately from TRTC since May 23, 2023.

TRTC’s five lines plus the New Taipei Metro Circular Line form a six-line, 146.5 km subtotal. This is not a total for every operating route shown on the current official map.

The map also shows New Taipei Metro’s 14.3 km Sanying Line, which runs through 12 stations from LB01 Dingpu to LB12 Yingtao Fude. It opened for passenger service and began free trial operation on June 30, 2026. At Dingpu, it connects with TRTC’s Bannan Line. Taoyuan Airport MRT remains a third, separate system operated by Taoyuan Metro Corporation.

The Wenhu Line is unusual because it is fully automated and driverless. Its rubber-tired trains operate between Taipei Zoo and Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center.

• Wenhu Line (BR, brown): Taipei Zoo ↔ Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center.
• Tamsui-Xinyi Line (R, red): Tamsui ↔ Xiangshan, including the short Xinbeitou Branch from Beitou.
• Songshan-Xindian Line (G, green): Songshan ↔ Xindian, including the Xiaobitan Branch from Qizhang.

How to read the Taipei MRT map

The Taipei MRT map combines line colors with station codes. Read it in four steps:

1. Match the line color and code, such as R for Tamsui-Xinyi or BL for Bannan.
2. Use the final station shown on the platform display to choose the correct direction.
3. At an interchange, match both codes; Ximen BL11/G12 connects the blue and green lines.
4. Check the operator boundary before assuming that one fare product covers every rail link.

Branches use their own labels, including Xinbeitou R22A and Xiaobitan G03A. The map also distinguishes the separately operated Circular, Sanying and Airport MRT services from TRTC’s five lines.

Use the line code and station number together: Ximen BL11/G12 is an interchange, for example, while Taipei 101/World Trade Center is R03. The same card, token or QR credential must be used at entry and exit.

Stored-value cards work across the TRTC network and Circular Line. An adult metro-to-bus transfer made under the one-hour rule receives an NT$8 (≈ US$0.25) discount, useful for destinations requiring a final bus connection.

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) connects through the separate Taoyuan Airport MRT to A1 Taipei Main Station, followed by a walk through the underground complex to TRTC’s BL12/R10 hub. Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA) is directly served at Songshan Airport BR13.

The destination matrix pairs each attraction with its practical line, station code and exit or transfer. Xiangshan R02 is the useful stop for Elephant Mountain, while Jiantan R15 is the primary station for Shilin Night Market.

The network uses a distance-based fare of NT$20-NT$65 (≈ US$0.62-US$2.00). Prices below use the Central Bank of the Republic of China closing rate of US$1 = NT$32.447 on that date.

Choose a single journey for occasional travel, a stored-value EasyCard or iPASS for repeated trips, or a timed pass for intensive sightseeing. The Transportation FunPASS also covers participating buses but excludes Taoyuan Airport MRT.

Buy a blue token at a machine or station counter, then tap it at entry and deposit it at exit. With EasyCard or iPASS, use the same card to tap in and tap out so the correct fare is deducted.

QR tickets from the official ticket website or the official TRTC app must be scanned at both gates. Its current Android and iPhone listings identify TRTC as developer or provider, avoiding similarly named third-party apps.

According to TRTC’s 2026 Frequent Passenger Program, eligible stored-value and transit-QR users receive next-month cashback of 5% after 11-20 rides, 10% after 21-40 and 15% after at least 42.

At TRTC-operated stations, direct contactless payment began on July 1, 2026 for Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover and Diners Club. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay are supported, but these trips do not earn passenger-program or transfer discounts.

The regular service window is 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM, but that is not one universal last-departure time. Station, direction and connection determine the final train, and some scheduled departures occur after 12:00 AM.

According to TRTC’s published operating rules, peak headways on core services average under six minutes, with dense central sections and Wenhu averaging under three minutes. After 11:00 PM, the systemwide TRTC average remains under 15 minutes.

TRTC’s published Wenhu schedule shows 2-4 minutes at weekday peaks and about 12 minutes after 11:00 PM. New Taipei Metro’s published Circular Line schedule gives 4 minutes 50 seconds at weekday peaks and 10 minutes in other evening periods.

There is no overnight MRT service. Check the first and last train tool for the exact station and direction, then plan another mode after the final departure.

The operating map and future projects must stay separate. Taipei’s Department of Rapid Transit Systems reported Circular Line Phase II was 31.9% complete on March 31, 2026, with a 2031 construction target; inspection steps must follow before passenger service.

Taipei’s Department of Rapid Transit Systems also lists a 2034 construction target for Circular Line Phase III, not a promised opening date. Its planned links include Songshan, Yongchun, Xiangshan and Taipei Zoo, where it is intended to meet Phase II.

On August 4, 2026, the Xinyi Eastern Extension was undergoing trial operation. Guangci/Fengtian Temple remained closed to boarding and alighting, leaving Xiangshan as the passenger terminus.

Fun Fact: The fully automated Wenhu Line runs on rubber tires. In 2025, TRTC trains averaged 19.7 million vehicle-km between failures, the operator’s second-best annual result.
