Riyadh Metro: Key facts at a glance

• All six colour-coded lines have been carrying passengers since 5 January 2025. RCRC’s figure of 85 stations is the project total, not a verified count of the stations open on any given day.
• The cheapest option is a Regular 2-hour pass for 4 SAR (approximately USD 1.07), and it covers unlimited Metro and Riyadh Bus trips for as long as it is valid.
• Trains run from 5:30 a.m. to midnight from Saturday to Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to midnight on Friday, according to the latest official notice of 5 September 2025.
• The Yellow Line links KAFD with three stations at King Khalid International Airport, serving Terminals 1 and 2, Terminals 3 and 4, and Terminal 5. Official information does not yet give an exact journey time or an airport-specific fare.
• Buy your pass in RCRC’s darb app or pick up a Darb Card at a station ticket machine; Apple Pay, Express Mode and supported bank cards also work at the gate.

Current Riyadh Metro service updates

Qasr Al Hokm has been in passenger service since 26 February 2025, providing the interchange between the Blue and Orange lines. Use the official journey planner before departure for current station-level information.

This guide explains the six colour-coded routes, exact interchange points, time-based fares, official operating hours and the Yellow Line connection to King Khalid International Airport.

At 176 km, Riyadh Metro holds the Guinness World Records title for the longest driverless metro network. The record is dated 30 January 2025 and applies specifically to the network’s driverless length.

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City, or RCRC, defines the project as six fully automated lines, 176 km of route and 85 stations. The official map shows that planned system, but these figures do not establish which individual stations are open on a given day.

RCRC’s current open-data export contains 83 unique technical station codes and no live open-or-closed field. The difference matters: the 85-station figure describes the project total, while neither number is a reliable same-day station count.

The rollout was phased. RCRC inaugurated the project on 27 November 2024. Blue, Yellow and Purple began service on 1 December, Red and Green followed on 15 December, and Orange started on 5 January 2025.

All six lines had therefore entered service by 5 January 2025. Individual stations followed separate dates. Qasr Al Hokm, for example, opened on 26 February 2025, after every line had started carrying passengers.

Riyadh Metro lines 1 to 6 at a glance

• Line 1, Blue: SAB Bank to Ad Dar Al Baida. The route follows the Olaya corridor and interchanges with Lines 4 and 6 at KAFD, Line 2 at stc, Line 5 at National Museum, and Line 3 at Qasr Al Hokm.
• Line 2, Red: King Saud University to King Fahad Sport City. It connects with Blue at stc, Green at Ministry of Education, and Purple at Al Hamra.
• Line 3, Orange: Jeddah Road to Khashm Al An. It connects with Blue at Qasr Al Hokm and Purple at An Naseem.

• Line 4, Yellow: Airport T1-2 to KAFD. Airport T5 and Airport T3-4 are intermediate airport stations; KAFD provides connections to Blue and Purple.
• Line 5, Green: Ministry of Education to National Museum. Both termini are interchanges, with Red at Ministry of Education and Blue at National Museum.
• Line 6, Purple: KAFD to An Naseem. It shares interchange stations with Yellow at Ar Rabi, Uthman Bin Affan Road and SABIC, and meets Orange at An Naseem.

In concise terms, the Blue Line runs from SAB Bank through the Olaya axis to Ad Dar Al Baida. For airport trips towards Olaya, the practical transfer is from Yellow to Blue at KAFD.

The official map is most useful when paired with an exact station name. KAFD, the National Museum, Riyadh Gallery and the historic centre have verified station assignments, while other well-known leisure districts do not have a matching station in the current RCRC inventory.

KAFD is the network’s three-line interchange for Blue, Yellow and Purple. Kingdom Centre is assigned to Al Urubah on the Blue Line by official tourism guidance, with the final section completed on foot.

For the National Museum, King Abdulaziz Historical Center and Al Murabba Palace, use National Museum station on Blue or Green. Qasr Al Hokm on Blue and Orange is the official starting point for a heritage walk to Masmak Fortress and Souq Al Zal.

Riyadh Gallery is assigned to King Fahad District station on the Blue Line. The similar King Fahad District 2 name should not be substituted when planning this journey.

The current RCRC station inventory contains no station named Diriyah, Boulevard, Hittin or Boulevard World. Diriyah, Boulevard Riyadh City and Boulevard World therefore do not have a verified direct Metro station or official last-mile route in the available data.

RCRC assigns three named Yellow Line stations to King Khalid International Airport terminals. Its current data establishes the route via KAFD, but not an exact journey time or airport-specific fare.

The network uses time-based passes rather than a distance-based single fare. Regular passes include unlimited Metro and Riyadh Bus journeys during their validity, while First Class passes add access to the designated First Class Metro areas.

As of 21 July 2026, Riyadh Public Transport listed the fares in the ticket table. The SAR-USD conversion date is also 21 July 2026; IMF reference-rate data recorded 1 USD to 3.750000 SAR on that date, and the approximate values are rounded to two decimal places.

The official darb app is published by RCRC on both Android and iOS. It can plan Metro, bus and on-demand journeys, show live bus data, and buy, store and activate tickets. It also provides QR e-tickets and purchase and travel history.

Physical Darb Cards are sold at station ticket vending machines. At a gate, passengers can also tap Apple Pay, Express Mode or a supported bank card. Riyadh Public Transport does not state that bank-card taps apply an automatic fare cap or select a pass automatically.

Family and women-only areas belong to Regular Class rather than a separate fare class, and no distinct family fare is officially listed. Official fare information also describes every Metro class as accessible.

How to ride the Metro in Riyadh:

1. Plan the route in RCRC’s darb app and identify the exact station and interchange shown on the official map.
2. Buy a pass in darb, obtain a Darb Card at a ticket vending machine, or use a supported contactless payment method at the gate.
3. If using the app, store and activate the ticket and follow the QR e-ticket instructions shown there.
4. Use the correct class area. Regular passes cover unlimited Metro and Riyadh Bus travel within the pass period; First Class passes cover First Class Metro areas and regular buses.

The latest Riyadh Public Transport regular-hours notice available is dated 5 September 2025. It states that the network runs from 5:30 a.m. to midnight from Saturday to Thursday and from 10 a.m. to midnight on Friday.

The published hours are network-wide, not station-specific first and last train times. The regular schedule ends at midnight, and no dedicated overnight replacement service is identified in Riyadh Public Transport information dated through 21 July 2026.

Riyadh Public Transport does not publish a current minute-by-minute frequency. Use RCRC’s darb app shortly before travel to check the journey, same-day changes and station-level information rather than relying on an undated interval from another source.

The special Ramadan 2026 schedule has expired and does not apply to current journeys.

Passenger service opened in phases. The project was inaugurated on 27 November 2024, three lines began carrying riders on 1 December 2024, and every one of the six lines had started by 5 January 2025.

RCRC is the public authority behind the King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public Transport. It defines the Metro project scope, publishes public station and line datasets, and is also the verified publisher or provider of the darb app in both major app stores.

RCRC announced a historical plan in December 2024 for an approximately 10 km Red Line extension towards Diriyah with three stations. No current final route, station list or opening date was confirmed by RCRC by 21 July 2026, so the extension must not be treated as an available journey.

Fun Fact: KAFD is the only verified three-line interchange in the current station data. Blue, Yellow and Purple meet there, making it the key transfer between the airport corridor, Olaya axis and the eastern Purple Line.
