Current Kolkata Metro service updates
Service patterns can change by corridor, day and special event. Check the line-specific timetable before an evening, weekend or airport trip. In particular, Blue Line trains currently run only between Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram, because services to Kavi Subhash have been suspended since 28 July 2025.
The Kolkata Metro map puts the current passenger corridors, transfers and airport branch into one view. This guide explains which sections are in service, how the published fare brackets work and where an unfinished extension must not be mistaken for an open route.
Metro Railway’s operator portal labels its whole-system plan as updated on 25 August 2025 and presents it as an embedded image rather than a standalone PDF.

Kolkata opened India’s first metro in 1984, and its East-West corridor includes the country’s first underwater metro transportation tunnel beneath a major river. The March 2026 Ministry corridor table records commissioned passenger sections on five colour corridors, with lengths adding up to 73.0 km.
Services are run within Indian Railways by Metro Railway, Kolkata, which is a zonal railway. Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited, or KMRCL, implemented the Green Line East-West corridor as a Government of India enterprise. It should not be presented as a separate citywide passenger operator.
Howrah connects the Green corridor with the railway complex. Treat it as an interchange point and use the relevant railway information for the onward journey.
The 73.0 km figure is a commissioned-corridor total. It should not be read as a promise that every platform or terminus is available on a particular day. That distinction matters on Blue, where the corridor is officially commissioned to Kavi Subhash but commercial services between Shahid Khudiram and Kavi Subhash have been suspended since 28 July 2025, so trains currently run only to Shahid Khudiram.
The Kolkata Metro route map is most useful when read with the line status table below. Green is complete as an operating corridor, but Purple, Orange and Yellow all have extensions that belong in construction updates, not in a list of places passengers can already reach.
The status distinction is especially important at Kavi Subhash. Because Blue trains do not currently reach Kavi Subhash, the Blue-to-Orange interchange there is not available at present, even though Orange services still start from Kavi Subhash. Reaching Orange from the Blue Line requires an alternative route until Blue services to Kavi Subhash resume.
| Line | Open section in July 2026 | Key interchanges | What is not open yet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | Dakshineswar through central Kolkata; corridor commissioned to Kavi Subhash, whose current platform access requires a same-day check | Esplanade for Green; Noapara for Yellow | No extension beyond the commissioned ends; current Kavi Subhash access is unresolved |
| Green | Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V | Esplanade for Blue; Howrah for the railway complex | No corridor gap remains |
| Purple | Joka to Majerhat | No additional metro interchange is confirmed | Majerhat to Esplanade, including Victoria |
| Orange | Kavi Subhash or New Garia to Beleghata | A Blue connection at Kavi Subhash should not be promised while platform access is unresolved | Beleghata to Dum Dum Airport |
| Yellow | Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar | Noapara for Blue | Airport toward Michael Nagar and Barasat |
The network reaches central Kolkata, Howrah, Dakshineswar and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The destinations table below uses officially named stations where possible. For Eden Gardens and Science City, it identifies suggested railheads and states where an onward local connection is required.
This Kolkata Metro map turns named stations and careful onward connections into practical trip planning. It also avoids a common error: a future station or geographically close railhead does not become a direct visitor connection until an official source and the final local transfer support that conclusion.
| Sight or destination | Line | Station | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Victoria Memorial | Blue Line | Maidan | West Bengal Tourism names Maidan as the nearest station. Continue on foot or take a short local ride according to the exit in use. |
| Howrah Bridge | Green Line | Howrah | Use the subway connection to the railway complex, then follow signs toward the western bridge approach. The district administration describes the railway station as walking distance from the bridge. |
| Dakshineswar Kali Temple | Blue Line | Dakshineswar | The extension was officially presented as access for temple visitors. Follow local signs for the final approach. |
| Kalighat Kali Temple | Blue Line | Kalighat or Jatin Das Park | West Bengal Tourism names both stations and recommends a bus or cab onward. There is no documented direct station entrance to the temple. |
| Park Street | Blue Line | Park Street | Choose the exit for the exact address because Park Street is a dining and nightlife corridor, not a single sight. |
| Eden Gardens | Blue Line and Green Line | Esplanade, suggested railhead | Continue through the Maidan area on foot or by local transport. No official venue source confirms a nearest station or walking time. |
| Science City | Orange Line | Barun Sengupta, suggested railhead | Continue locally along the EM Bypass corridor. No official source confirms an integrated entrance or nearest-station status. |
| Indian Museum | Blue Line | Park Street | West Bengal Tourism identifies Park Street as the nearest station. Check the best exit for the museum entrance. |
| Prinsep Ghat | Blue Line | Park Street | West Bengal Tourism identifies Park Street and also lists local bus and taxi access. Treat this as an onward connection rather than a direct station entrance. |
Fares are distance-based, with different published brackets by line. The operator’s published fare matrix is dated 22 May 2024, so the prices below are a dated reference rather than proof of a complete network-wide July 2026 tariff.
Passengers can use stored-value Smart Cards or mobile QR tickets. The official Aamar Kolkata Metro app is provided by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) on Android and iPhone. An October 2025 Ministry release says app tickets are discounted but does not state a percentage.
USD conversions use the Reserve Bank of India reference rate of ₹96.2537 to US$1 at 1:00 pm on 21 July 2026. Rounded conversions are approximate.
| Ticket | Price | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Line mobile QR journey | Published distance brackets: ₹5.00, ₹10.00, ₹15.00, ₹20.00 or ₹25.00, approximately US$0.05 to US$0.26 | In the Aamar Kolkata Metro app for Android or iPhone |
| Green or Orange mobile QR journey | Published distance brackets: ₹5.00, ₹10.00, ₹20.00 or ₹30.00, approximately US$0.05 to US$0.31 | In the Aamar Kolkata Metro app for Android or iPhone |
| Purple Joka to Majerhat mobile QR journey | Published distance brackets: ₹5.00, ₹10.00 or ₹20.00, approximately US$0.05 to US$0.21 | In the Aamar Kolkata Metro app for Android or iPhone |
| Stored-value Smart Card | Fare deducted by journey; confirm current deposit, bonus and balance terms at the station | At stations; link and top up the card in the Aamar Kolkata Metro app for Android or iPhone |
| Yellow Line airport journey | The 22 May 2024 published matrix does not state a current fare; check before purchase | At the station, or in the Aamar Kolkata Metro app for Android or iPhone |
For a Smart Card, touch the card at the automatic fare collection gates when entering and leaving so the journey fare can be deducted. Confirm current card deposits, bonuses and maximum balances at the station before paying.
For a QR ticket, select the journey in Aamar Kolkata Metro and use the generated code at the entry and exit gates. The store listings also support linking and topping up a stored-value Smart Card. Both app stores identify CRIS as the provider.
Operating hours differ by corridor. On the Blue Line, first trains run from about 06:00 and last trains leave the terminals around 22:30, at roughly six to seven minute intervals during the day. The Green Line runs from about 06:40 until around 22:05 on weekdays and Saturdays, but only from 09:00 on Sundays. The Purple Line runs on weekdays from about 06:40 to 21:05, provides only an afternoon service from 13:25 on Saturdays, and does not run on Sundays. The Orange Line runs on weekdays only, from about 07:40 to 20:45, with no service on Saturdays or Sundays. The Yellow Line airport branch runs on weekdays from about 07:20 until just after 21:00, roughly every twelve minutes during the day. Because these patterns change with each revision, confirm the line-specific official timetable before an early, late, weekend or airport trip.
A May 2026 Ministry release described Blue’s existing operating basis as about five minutes while presenting 2.5 minutes as an upgrade target. This does not guarantee a five-minute interval all day, and it must not be applied to Green, Purple, Orange or Yellow.
Current information does not support a single network-wide closing time or an all-line night-service rule. Plan around the final train shown for the chosen corridor and date rather than assuming that a late Blue service also exists on another line.
The Kolkata Metro began on 24 October 1984 with a 3.4 km service from Esplanade to Bhowanipore, now Netaji Bhavan. It remains India’s oldest metro network, while the Green corridor added a modern cross-river connection between Howrah and the eastern side of the city.
The completed Green route now runs from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V. Its former central gap closed when passenger service began between Sealdah and Esplanade in August 2025, so that missing link must not appear as a future project on an updated Kolkata Metro map.
The Purple extension from Majerhat toward Esplanade remains under construction. A tunnel breakthrough at Victoria on 10 July 2026 was a construction milestone, not the opening of a station for Victoria Memorial visitors.
Orange is open only as far as Beleghata. The remaining 22.2 km toward Dum Dum Airport is not open, and the closure of a 62 m viaduct gap at Chingrighata in May 2026 marked engineering progress rather than a passenger-service launch.
Yellow runs to Jai Hind Bimanbandar, but it does not yet continue through the full planned northern corridor. Work toward Michael Nagar is in progress, while the New Barrackpore to Barasat section is held up by land acquisition and encroachment issues.
Green requires no future-gap caveat between Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V. Its full operation since August 2025 is one of the most important corrections when comparing a current plan with older diagrams.
Fun Fact: A January 2024 Ministry project note states that the Green Line spends about 45 seconds beneath the Hooghly River. Its twin bored tunnels include a 520-metre section directly below the river, about 350 metres downstream of Howrah Bridge. This is India’s first underwater metro transportation tunnel beneath a major river.
Yes. The Yellow Line serves Jai Hind Bimanbandar, and a subway links the station with the airport terminal. The Yellow Line runs to Jai Hind Bimanbandar on weekdays from about 07:20 until just after 21:00, roughly every twelve minutes during the day. Change at Noapara for the Blue Line toward central Kolkata; Noapara is served by the currently operating Dakshineswar-Shahid Khudiram section, so the transfer is available.
Still confirm the current line-specific schedule before an early or late flight.
Confirm today’s line-specific notices and timetable before setting out. A static article cannot guarantee real-time operation, and service changes may affect one corridor without applying to the others.
Do not assume the weekday pattern applies on Sunday. Sunday departures vary by corridor, so check the line-specific official schedule before travelling.
There is no single start time that can be applied safely to all five corridors. First departures differ by line, direction and day. Check the relevant origin and date in the timetable.
Five colour corridors have commissioned passenger sections: Blue, Green, Purple, Orange and Yellow. Their official commissioned lengths total 73.0 km.
A reliable consolidated 2026 total of unique open stations is unavailable, and Kavi Subhash makes a simple count especially risky. Use the current plan and the line status table rather than an unsupported total.
Stored-value Smart Cards are available at stations according to operator ticketing guidance. Touch the card at entry and exit, where the fare is deducted, and use Aamar Kolkata Metro to link and top up a card.
Check the current station terms before paying because the 2026 deposit, recharge bonus and maximum balance are not stated here.
Do not rely on a women-only coach being available. Look for current seat and carriage markings and follow station staff guidance.
A 2015 Green Line rolling-stock specification required at least two signed ladies-only seating rows per car, but that design requirement does not verify a women-only coach rule across the 2026 network.
Use the Kolkata Metro route map with the open-line status table above so unfinished extensions are not mistaken for passenger routes.
