PATH is one of the few rapid transit systems in the United States that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Port Authority’s 2026 budget book records 14 route miles and 13 stations, with six stations in New York and seven in New Jersey.

Port Authority Trans-Hudson is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Its tunnels connect Manhattan with Jersey City, Hoboken, Harrison and Newark, making it both a commuter rail service and a practical cross-Hudson link for visitors.

PATH is separate from the New York City Subway and uses its own fare system.

NJ TRANSIT rail, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and ferries are separate connections. Transfers do not make them part of PATH.

Overnight, the yellow direct service is replaced by Journal Square to 33 Street via Hoboken, a nine-stop pattern. Newark to World Trade Center continues, so the night network remains useful but requires more careful route checking.

How Does the PATH Train Map Change on Weekends and Late at Night?

On weekends and holidays, all four direct routes operate from 10 AM to 9 PM; after 9 PM, service changes to two night patterns. The current weekend schedule provides the published intervals.

The official PATH diagrams separate weekdays from weekends, while the trip planner distinguishes day and night. A July 2026 service update confirms that all four direct routes have operated during weekend daytime since May 17, 2026.

Between 9 PM and 10 AM on weekends and holidays, PATH returns to Newark to World Trade Center plus Journal Square to 33 Street via Hoboken. On weekdays, the same two-pattern night network applies from 11 PM to 6 AM.

Official PATH diagrams show the service pattern, not a guaranteed departure. The current weekday schedule notes that published times can vary by up to three minutes and construction can alter service. Use the official trip planner for a trip on your specific date.

PATH is useful between Lower Manhattan and the New Jersey waterfront, as well as for Hoboken, Harrison and Newark. Choose the station before the color because Manhattan destinations sit on different branches.

Which PATH Stations Serve Popular Destinations?

The PATH destination matrix combines route, station and arrival advice. Check the service period first because the Hoboken detour changes late-night trips on the Midtown branch.

How Do You Reach Newark Airport from PATH?

PATH does not run directly to Newark Liberty International Airport. The airport’s public transportation information directs travelers via Newark Penn Station and an NJ TRANSIT Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line service to Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station.

At Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station, transfer to AirTrain Newark. The rail segment from Newark Penn takes 5 minutes, not the total journey time from Manhattan or Jersey City.

An NJ TRANSIT ticket to EWR includes AirTrain, while the PATH fare is separate. From AirTrain, travelers can reach Terminal A by a covered walk of about 15 minutes or a shuttle ride of about 5 minutes.

Replacement buses can operate when AirTrain is interrupted. JFK and LaGuardia are also outside PATH territory, so travelers need separate airport connections for those airports.

The Port Authority’s May 2026 fare notice sets the regular PATH train fare at USD 3.25 per ride. Contactless TAPP, a physical TAPP Card, multi-trip products and unlimited passes serve different needs; reduced fares are limited to approved riders.

Contactless pay as you go is the simplest visitor option. The official TAPP loading guide states that a physical TAPP Card costs USD 5.00 before fare value or passes are added; the TAPP product page lists multi-trip and unlimited products.

Physical TAPP Cards hold stored value, multi-trip products or unlimited passes. Unlimited products have an 18-minute lockout before reuse at the same station.

Children age 5 and younger ride free. Reduced Fare at USD 1.60 is available only after approval for riders age 65 or older and people with a qualifying disability.

The SmartLink transition FAQ and the Port Authority fare page state that SmartLink and remaining pay-per-ride MetroCard value are accepted by PATH only through August 31, 2026. From September 1, use a TAPP Card, contactless bank card or supported smart device.

OMNY is not accepted. The same contactless bank card can work separately with both systems, but they are not integrated and provide no implied transfer value.

The PATH train schedule runs continuously, but service frequency depends on the route and period. Weekday direct routes generally operate from 6 AM to 11 PM; overnight service uses Newark to World Trade Center and Journal Square to 33 Street via Hoboken.

During busier weekday periods, PATH trains commonly run at 4- to 15-minute intervals. Some midday and evening periods reach 20 minutes; deep-night gaps can reach 40 minutes.

During weekend daytime service, the two 33 Street routes run every 10 minutes. The two World Trade Center routes run every 20 minutes from 10 AM to 9 PM.

RidePATH cannot buy a ticket or pay a fare. Use TAPP and the official fare channels for payment; use RidePATH only for travel information and service monitoring.

PATH grew from the Hudson Tubes and Hudson & Manhattan Railroad; current capital work focuses on the existing system rather than a direct airport extension.

What Is the History of PATH?

The Hudson & Manhattan Railroad opened its first connection in 1908. Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation was formed in May 1962 and acquired the former railroad’s tunnels, vehicles and Manhattan terminal properties on September 1 that year.

The American Society of Civil Engineers identifies it as the first US railroad tunnel beneath a major river and credits the project with bringing shield tunneling for underwater construction to the country.

Fun Fact: Theodore Roosevelt switched on the line’s electrical power from the White House for the ceremonial opening on February 25, 1908. The first honorary trip from 19th Street to Hoboken took 10.5 minutes, and regular service began at midnight.

What Is Planned for PATH?

As of August 2026, no PATH extension is being built to Newark Liberty International Airport. The Port Authority’s financing documents place the earlier rail-extension proposal in a future capital plan, not a scheduled direct connection.

A separate USD 160 million EWR Station Access Project improves access to the existing airport rail and AirTrain connection. Its design preserves a possible future extension option, but the approved scope does not include new PATH tracks or an airport station.

The 2026 to 2035 capital plan allocates USD 2.6 billion to vehicles, track, train control, tunnel water management, fare gates and TAPP. These upgrades are distinct from the airport proposal.
