Atlanta’s four color-coded MARTA rail lines all meet at Five Points in Downtown Atlanta. MARTA recorded 4.7 million rail passenger trips over a 35-day period that included FIFA World Cup matches, fan festivals, concerts, other events and the July 4 Peachtree Road Race. This event-period figure is not an annual ridership total.

MARTA’s rail network covers about 48 miles and serves 38 stations on the Red, Gold, Blue and Green lines. Red and Gold run north to south, while Blue and Green run east to west. Five Points is the central Downtown transfer point.

Rail service began on June 30, 1979, when the East Line opened between Avondale and Georgia State. MARTA stands for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.

The Atlanta Streetcar, MARTA buses, Rapid A-Line BRT and ATL airport people movers are separate from the four heavy-rail lines.

Atlanta MARTA Rail Lines and Termini

• Red Line: North Springs to Airport Station. After 9 p.m., Red trains operate only as far south as Lindbergh Center, where airport passengers can connect to the Gold Line.
• Gold Line: Doraville to Airport Station. This remains the direct north-south airport service during the later evening period.
• Blue Line: Hamilton E. Holmes to Indian Creek, crossing Downtown through Five Points.
• Green Line: Bankhead to Edgewood/Candler Park on weekdays until 9 p.m. Weekend service until 9 p.m. ends at King Memorial, and later service ends at Vine City. Before some major Mercedes-Benz Stadium events finish, trains may operate only between Bankhead and Ashby.

Use the current line timetable with the map for time-dependent Green Line and late-evening Red Line service.

How to Read the Atlanta Metro Map

The map uses line colors, termini and transfer points. Use it in four steps:

1. Find the destination station and identify its line color.
2. Use the train’s advertised terminus to confirm the direction.
3. Change at Five Points when a trip crosses between the north-south and east-west corridors.
4. Check the current timetable for late Red Line and time-dependent Green Line termini.

For a city trip, find the destination station, check the line color, and use the train’s terminus to confirm the direction. Metro Atlanta welcomed 52 million visitors in 2025.

Downtown is centered on Five Points and nearby Peachtree Center, Georgia State and SEC District stations. Midtown destinations commonly use North Avenue, Midtown or Arts Center. Buckhead is on the Red Line north of Lindbergh Center.

At a transfer, follow the color and terminus shown for the next train. Five Points connects every line. Keep using the same physical card or the same card in your mobile wallet throughout the trip.

Atlanta MARTA Rail from ATL Airport

Red and Gold Line trains run directly from Airport Station at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The station is inside the Domestic Terminal between the North and South baggage claims. The average rail journey from Airport Station to Five Points takes about 16 minutes.

From the airport, board a northbound Red or Gold train for Downtown. Use Five Points for all four lines. Midtown stations remain on the north-south trunk, while Red-only destinations north of Lindbergh Center may require a Gold-to-Red transfer after about 8:30 p.m.

International arrivals must first reach the Domestic Terminal. ATL’s free terminal shuttle operates around the clock and takes about 15 minutes. The Plane Train connects airport concourses and the SkyTrain serves the Rental Car Center, but neither is part of MARTA Rail.

MARTA Rail uses a flat standard fare instead of distance zones. A regular trip costs $2.50. One journey includes up to four free transfers within three hours, although round trips and Atlanta Streetcar transfers are excluded.

Day passes provide unlimited MARTA train and bus rides for consecutive days from first use. Better Breeze supports Breeze Cards, paper Breeze Tickets, contactless bank cards and supported cards in mobile wallets.

A reusable Breeze Card costs $2.00 in addition to the fare. A non-reloadable paper Breeze Ticket costs $1.00, expires 90 days after purchase, and carries the selected fare.

Breeze Cards and paper Breeze Tickets are sold at ticket vending machines and RideStores.

The app lets you link cards and add stored value or passes, but you do not tap the app itself at the gate.

At the gate, tap a Breeze Card, Breeze Ticket, contactless bank card or a supported card in your mobile wallet.

A physical bank card and its digital-wallet version count as different cards, so use the same one throughout your journey.

MARTA rail generally runs from about 4:45 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekdays and from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekends.

On weekdays, trains run approximately every 20 minutes from 5 to 6 a.m., every 10 minutes from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., every 12 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and every 20 minutes after 7 p.m.

On weekends, trains run about every 20 minutes from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

MARTA Rail does not run 24 hours. After 9 p.m., southbound Red Line trains terminate at Lindbergh Center, where airport passengers can transfer to the Gold Line. Check the current line schedule before a late trip.

Current MARTA Rail investment focuses on existing stations, platforms and the vehicle fleet.

The Bankhead platform project is extending capacity from two cars to eight cars, with completion planned for 2027. This is a station platform project, not a Green Line track extension. Lenox rehabilitation is also under construction with a 2027 target.

The Five Points Transformation entered Phase One, deconstruction, on May 17, 2025. The project remained in that phase in July 2026.

As of June 2026, the new CQ400 railcars were undergoing testing and safety certification.

Fun Fact: The Eiseman Facade was dismantled when Victorian-era department stores were demolished and later rebuilt at Five Points Station.
