Line 10: Service between Nuevos Ministerios and Cuzco is interrupted for the Santiago Bernabéu station rebuild, with a free EMT replacement bus operating in its place. The summer closure extends temporarily to Plaza de Castilla. Line 8 airport service is not affected.

The Madrid metro map covers Spain’s largest metro network and one of Europe’s longest systems. It has 12 numbered lines, the Ramal branch, 302 stations and about 300 km of track. This guide explains the official map, 2026 fares, operating hours and airport access.

Madrid opened its first 3.5 km section between Sol and Cuatro Caminos on October 17, 1919. The state-owned Metro de Madrid S.A. operates the trains, while the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM) sets fares. The regional government reported 736.9 million rides in 2025.

Unlike Spain’s road and mainline rail traffic, Madrid Metro trains still run on the left.

How to Read the Madrid Metro Map

Follow the colored line toward the terminal station shown on platform signs. Interchange stations such as Sol, Ópera and Nuevos Ministerios appear as connected nodes. Zone A covers central Madrid; the standard single and 10-trip fares below apply within it. The Madrid subway map also marks accessible stations.

Madrid welcomed 11.2 million tourists in 2025, according to the city tourism board. Major attractions have direct station assignments: Puerta del Sol via Sol on Lines 1, 2 and 3; the Royal Palace via Ópera on Lines 2, 5 and Ramal; the Prado Museum via Banco de España on Line 2; and Retiro Park via Retiro on Line 2.

From Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, Line 8 runs from Terminal 4 and T1-T2-T3 to Nuevos Ministerios in under 20 minutes. The airport supplement is €3.00 (approx. $3.42). Cercanías C-1 also runs every 20 minutes between Chamartín and Terminal 4, while the airport express bus operates around the clock for about €5.00 (approx. $5.70).

Accessibility: The Comunidad de Madrid reports that about 70 percent of stations were fully accessible in January 2026. The network has 571 elevators and 1,709 escalators. The expansion plan targets 84 percent accessibility by 2028.

The rechargeable Multi card costs €2.50 (approx. $2.85) and can hold the main ticket products. Zone A single tickets cost €1.50 to €2.00 (approx. $1.71 to $2.28), depending on the number of stations. The 10-trip Metrobús ticket costs €7.30 (approx. $8.33) under the regional fare subsidy that the Comunidad de Madrid has extended through 2026. Tourist passes range from €10.30 to €43.20 (approx. $11.75 to $49.27) for Zone A and €15.40 to €62.80 (approx. $17.56 to $71.62) for Zone T. Prices use the ECB reference rate of €1 = $1.1405 on July 14, 2026.

Which ticket offers the best value? The 10-trip ticket is the fare tip for repeated central trips. The tourist pass becomes worthwhile at roughly 14 rides but includes the airport supplement and offers greater convenience.

Buy tickets from machines and tobacconists or use the official CRTM app. Validate a physical or virtual ticket at the gate reader. Contactless bank-card and phone payments are also available at many gates, with a flat introductory fare of €1.50 (approx. $1.71) per ride.

Madrid Metro operates daily from 6:00 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. In 2026, Line 6 closes at 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday for automation work, with free SC1 and SC2 replacement buses.

Peak trains run every 2 to 6 minutes. Line 1 typically runs every 4.5 to 7.5 minutes during the day and every 15 minutes after midnight Sunday through Thursday. Check line-specific intervals with Metro de Madrid.

At night, around 30 EMT Búho routes take over. Lines N1 to N26 leave from around Plaza de Cibeles and Alonso Martínez, N28 and N31 from Moncloa, and NC1 and NC2 run between Atocha and Cuatro Caminos. Weekend service is generally every 15 minutes.

Madrid’s network continues to grow. Line 11 is being extended as the “Gran Diagonal.” The 6.6 km Plaza Elíptica to Conde de Casal construction section is scheduled for completion in 2027. Work toward Valdebebas and Airport Terminal 4 follows from 2027, with completion planned for 2031.

Fun Fact: A ghost station lies beneath Plaza de Chamberí. Chamberí, one of the original eight stations from 1919, closed in 1966 because its platforms could not be lengthened. It reopened as the free Andén 0 museum in 2008; reservations are required. Iglesia on Line 1 is the nearest active station.
