Current service updates
The Tunnelbana runs throughout the weekend. Before traveling, check SL Trafikläget for changes affecting your line.
The Stockholm Metro Map helps you navigate the Tunnelbana. The SL rail network map (Spårtrafikkarta, edition 14 April 2025) can be enlarged above or downloaded as a PDF. It shows the existing network; for new extensions and current journeys, consult SL’s latest travel information.
Tunnelbana Stockholm, also called the Stockholm Metro, connects the center with the suburbs. This guide covers the lines, stations for major sights, SL tickets, service times and ways to travel to Arlanda Airport.
The Stockholm Metro Map PDF is useful for navigating the seven Tunnelbana routes. For Pendeltåg connections, check the current timetable. Planned extensions shown or discussed here are not yet open.

Stockholm’s first horse-drawn trams began operating in Norrmalm on July 10, 1877. The tram tunnel opened between Medborgarplatsen and Skanstull in 1933 is now part of the green Tunnelbana line. Today’s metro links the center with many suburbs, while its stations are destinations for art in their own right. The Stockholm Subway Map shows the three colors; according to SL, the Stockholm Metro network spans more than 100 km and has 100 stations.
The first Tunnelbana section, from Slussen to Hökarängen, opened on October 1, 1950. All three color groups meet at T-Centralen, where you can transfer between them. Blue lines T10 and T11, red lines T13 and T14, and green lines T17, T18 and T19 have seven published line timetables.
SL organizes service on behalf of Region Stockholm. Connecting Stockholm has operated the Tunnelbana since November 2, 2025. Former operator MTR is no longer the current source for metro operations and timetables.
Look for a T on a white background at metro entrances. SL reports more than one million boardings on an ordinary weekday. The blue, red and green colors are especially helpful when using the map.
The numbers identify branches within the three color groups. These endpoints appear in SL timetables valid through December 12, 2026; individual trains may terminate earlier.
The Stockholm Metro Map therefore depicts a branching system. Use the color to find your transfer, then the line number and displayed destination to board the right train.
From Gamla stan station, you can walk to the Royal Palace in about five minutes. Green and red trains serve the same station, which is also convenient for the Nobel Prize Museum at Stortorget 2. For Stockholm City Hall, take a blue train to Rådhuset or get off at T-Centralen.
For the Vasa Museum, take red line T13 to Karlaplan and walk for about ten minutes. The museum itself recommends tram 7 as the simpler approach.
| Sight/Place | Line | Station | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Palace | Green/Red | Gamla stan | about a 5-minute walk |
| Vasa Museum | Red T13 | Karlaplan | about a 10-minute walk; museum recommends tram 7 |
| Stockholm City Hall | Blue T10/T11 | Rådhuset | continue on foot; T-Centralen is an alternative |
| Nobel Prize Museum | Green/Red | Gamla stan | Stortorget 2 |
| Art station T-Centralen | Blue/Red/Green | T-Centralen | blue-and-white plant motifs on blue platforms |
| Art station Stadion | Red T14 | Stadion | rainbow inside a pale blue vault |
| Art station Solna centrum | Blue T11 | Solna centrum | red sky over a green forest |
| Art station Kungsträdgården | Blue T10/T11 | Kungsträdgården | red, white and green palace-garden motifs |
Four stations on different branches make a short metro art itinerary. At the blue platforms of T-Centralen, you will see blue-and-white plant motifs. Stadion on red line T14 has a rainbow against pale blue rock, while Solna centrum on blue line T11 shows a red sky above a green forest.
The blue-line terminus Kungsträdgården combines red, white and green with motifs from the former palace garden. You can also walk to the Royal Palace from there. The artworks span several branches, so check the relevant line before setting out.
Arlanda Airport has no Tunnelbana station. Take your metro branch to T-Centralen and follow signs to Stockholm C. From tracks 1 and 2 there, Arlanda Express reaches Arlanda South in 18 minutes or Arlanda North in 19 minutes.
A regular Express single ticket for adults aged 26 to 64 costs 340 SEK (≈ $34.28). Arlanda South serves terminals 2 through 4, while Arlanda North serves terminal 5.
As a rail alternative, the SL Pendeltåg from Stockholm C takes about 38 minutes to Arlanda Central, in SkyCity between terminals 4 and 5. A station access fee of 157 SEK (≈ $15.83) applies in addition to a valid SL ticket unless it is already included.
Compare the total fare before choosing the Pendeltåg. Check whether your selected ticket includes Arlanda passage; the standard 75-minute ticket alone does not describe that extra charge.
Vy Flygbussarna connects Arlanda terminals 5 and 2 with Stockholm C at Cityterminalen. The operator lists a journey of about 42 minutes. Adult tickets start at 129 SEK (≈ $13.01), with the actual fare varying by departure.
The bus arrives at Cityterminalen, an alternative if you want a direct ride to the long-distance bus terminal. Check the Vy Flygbussarna timetable for your last departure and current fare.
The Tunnelbana uses the SL fare system. A single ticket costs 43 SEK (≈ $4.34) and allows unlimited rides and transfers for 75 minutes within SL services in Stockholm County. Additional rules apply to Arlanda Airport and trips across the boundary to Uppsala.
For repeated journeys, SL offers passes for 24 hours, 72 hours and seven days. The hourly passes run from activation; the weekly pass remains valid until 4:30 AM after its seventh calendar day. The table separates regular and discounted fares.
Discounted fares apply to riders under 20 or aged 65 and over, as well as eligible full-time students with the required proof. Children under seven travel free when accompanied by someone with a valid ticket. The cheapest fare therefore depends on age and eligibility.
For visitors, SL lists single tickets and period passes. The best ticket choice depends on how often you use the metro, Pendeltåg, buses or trams. Eligible SL ferries are also covered; check the rules before any special journey.

You can buy a single ride contactlessly with an eligible bank card at the reader. Tickets are also sold in the official SL app, at ticket counters in metro and Pendeltåg stations, and at retailers such as Pressbyrån. The former SL Access Card has been invalid since 2023.
The reusable green SL-kort costs 50 SEK (≈ $5.04) and can hold specific tickets. Tapping the card starts a ticket’s validity; activate a prepaid app ticket before travel. A paper single ticket is valid from purchase.
The official app has been called SL since June 2026 and is published by AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik. Find it in the Apple App Store and on Google Play. Keep proof of eligibility available if you use a discounted fare.
For a limited time, a 30-day pass costs 530 SEK (≈ $53.44), or 325 SEK (≈ $32.77) at the discounted rate. According to SL’s October 4, 2026 announcement, purchase and activation must both happen by December 2, 2026. This is a temporary offer, not the standard ongoing fare.
Departures depend on line, direction, station and day of the week. SL’s green and red branch timetables generally show a ten-minute interval from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM on weekdays; the blue branches show it until 9:00 PM. Trains run more frequently from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Later, intervals increase: SL shows a 15-minute interval on blue branches from 9:00 PM to 12:00 AM, and on red and green branches from 10:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Trains can arrive more often on shared sections. Find the first and last departure for your station and travel date in its line timetable.
The Tunnelbana runs throughout the weekend. In the published Friday and Saturday night schedules, each branch has a 30-minute interval from 1:00 AM to 4:30 AM. For Sunday night and your own stop’s exact first or last train, consult the relevant line timetable.
The published SL line timetables are valid through December 12, 2026. They also show trains terminating earlier and differences between individual stations. Exact departures matter especially when connecting to Arlanda Express or Pendeltåg.
In its October 9, 2026 forecast, Nya tunnelbanan projects later opening dates than older project plans. The blue extension from Akalla to Barkarby and Barkarbystaden could open in the fourth quarter of 2028. The green line from Odenplan via Hagastaden and Södra Hagalund to Arenastaden is expected by the end of 2029.
The blue extension from Kungsträdgården toward Nacka and Söderort is forecast for the first quarter of 2032. The Hagsätra branch is planned to become part of the blue system. The new yellow line, by contrast, is the planned Fridhemsplan to Älvsjö route, forecast for 2037.
These opening dates have not been formally approved. For travel today, use the operating network and current SL schedules. The embedded SL rail network map (Spårtrafikkarta, edition 14 April 2025) does not show planned Tunnelbana extensions as open routes.
Fun Fact: SL calls the Tunnelbana the world’s longest art exhibition and reports art at almost all 100 stations. The four art stops in the destinations table show how designs vary, from T-Centralen’s blue platforms to the red sky at Solna centrum.
From May through September 2026, Spårvägsmuseet offered guided art tours of Tunnelbana stations, including tours in English. English tours covered the blue line on Thursdays and the red line on Saturdays. The museum publishes current tour details.
